Harvard scientists recently set out to learn whether music type was recognizable across cultures. These scientists collected hundreds of different types of songs (i.e., dance, healing, love song, and lullaby) from across the world and asked people from over 60 countries to listen and identify the type of song. Results from the study revealed that indeed people can discern these types of songs no matter the language the song is sung. In particular, people found it very easy to identify lullaby and dance songs. What does this all mean? Could it be that humans are hardwired to use certain notes in order to create certain types of songs? What function does this musical language play in the way humans communicate with one another?
